Single of the piece conducted by Fritz Reiner and played by the Pittsburgh Symphony yields a far more exciting performance, rhapsodic in the lyrical sections and tense in the dramatic ones, so precisely articulated that one feels Reiner and the Pittsburghers could have passed through the eye of a- needle on that number. It's Rodgers' music, all right—but Reiner's is unquestionably the more interesting interpretation. In fact, next to Reiner, Rodgers isn't interpreting at all, just beating time.

But it doesn't. If music were that exact, computers might run our concerts for us. The personality of a musician bears heavily on the music he or she plays. True, we hope that performing musicians will reveal the original work, not manipulate it. But there is no such thing as "playing as written" if by "as written" one means without imposing any commentary on the work. Musicians who manage that do so not by suppressing their personality but by not having much personality in the first place. And these, of course, are not the musicians that anyone wants to hear.
