Despite considerable improvement in the mechanical properties of all ceramics dental crowns, there remain cases of catastrophic failure of these materials in service [1-2]. Chipping and crack propagation in the porcelain veneer or along the interface at the porcelain side are the most common failure modes in zirconia-porcelain bi-layer systems [3-4]. Residual stresses in ceramic bi layer ceramic systems are unavoidable. They can be attributed to the sintering process, thermal expiation mismatch, and an elastic modules difference between the layers [5].

Therefore, the Zr02-Si02 glass ceramics could be evaluated for dental applications. However, the fracture toughness has only been evaluated for 60% Z1O2 [2]. No data on the elastic modulus is available, which is important for dental applications [4]. Furthermore, a glass ceramic with nano-grain size could have a higher mechanical strength because of the toughening effect of the residual stress in the grain boundary. In this study, a sol-gel method was optimized and used to prepare a translucent, nano-grain size glass ceramic suitable for dental crowns.
